St Clears C.P. School was built in 1874 on a quarter acre field called
Parc-y-wreck, between Gardde and Penpitch in the ownership of Samuel Davies,
Draper. The Board, under the Chairmanship of the Rev. Rees Morgan, Congregational
Minister residing at Ostrey, authorised James Isaac of Carmarthen to build
the school at a cost of £747. 9s. 7d. A draft mortgage was drawn
up for £935 payable in instalments over 50 years. The School was
opened on 1st September 1875 by W R H Powell Esquire of Maesgwynne to
provide education for 184 pupils. It incorporated children from Sion School,
Town Hall School and later the Bethlehem British School. Infants paid
1d a week and others 2d. Pupils from the National School were incorporated
in 1966. St Clears Board School ended a successful, happy life in 1992
after 117 years. Note: £. s. d. was the old British currency of Pounds, shillings and pence replaced by "decimal" currency in 1971. There were 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound
